The alternator is a type of generator that is being used on modern vehicles, and on your Acura's case, the Acura alternator is put to use. It changes the mechanical energy that is generated by the engine into electrical energy in the form of an alternating current. The primary function of the alternator is to charge the battery of the vehicle. But while the engine is running, the alternator also powers all the other electrical and electronic components that are installed on the vehicle.

A common alternator is comprised of four parts which is the rotor, the stator, the voltage regulator and the diode packs. The rotor is mainly a magnet that spins around the stator, which has an iron core that is wrapped with copper wires. Working together, the rotor and the stator generates alternating current that would further be turned by the diode packs into direct current which can be used to charge the battery and power all the other electrical components in the vehicle. The voltage regulator is being utilized to control and maintain the amount of voltage provided by the alternator.

There are a lot of factors that may cause the alternator to fail. A defective or broken alternator belt is one. But if the damage is on any of the four basic parts of the alternator, you are going to have to replace the entire alternator. You can also have the broken alternator rebuilt but a new alternator is better since it will definitely last longer.
